Grant awarded for new show
PRESS RELEASE:
THE DEMON BARBER THEATRE SHOW (Working title)
The Demon Barber Roadshow is pleased to announce it has been awarded £35,000 by Arts Council England, Yorkshire to produce a theatre show with traditional English dance at its core.
The new show, based on a 10 minute pilot shown at York Theatre Royal last year, will be launched in May 2010.
The Yorkshire based Demon Barbers, who earlier this year won 'Best Live Act' @ the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, have been pushing the boundaries of traditional dance in their Roadshow since its formation in 2001
In this project they take a step further by inviting street and break dancers to work with them along with contemporary dance choreographer Bobak Walker from Leeds. Yorkshire Dance, also based in Leeds, continue to support the project by offering residency space in their rehearsal studios.
The grant gives The Demon Barbers, who are well known in the Yorkshire region for their education work in schools, a great opportunity to raise the profile of traditional English music, song and dance through mainstream theatre.
Craig Monk, Music Officer, Arts Council England, Yorkshire, says: 'Arts Council England is pleased to support the Demon Barbers to develop and showcase the Demon Barber Theatre Show. Our lottery award will enable the creation of work which celebrates regional distinctiveness and fosters innovative collaborations between practitioners of traditional and modern music, dance and theatre'.
